Acoustic shock waves, a new weapon against angina?

چکیده
In the years before direct revascularisation for drug-refractory angina pectoris, some indirect methods were explored to improve myocardial ischaemia. Carotid nerve stimulation activated by the patient when angina emerged and Vineberg surgery [1] with implantation of the free end of the mammary artery (started about 1963) are examples of desperate attempts to suppress untreatable symptoms. Both were abandoned because of non-proven effects in contrast to direct revascularisation, which arrived around 1967. The favourable effects and safety of the current percutaneous coronary intervention and bypass surgery permit direct revascularisation in almost all categories of patients with myocardial ischaemia. However, for some patients direct revascularisation or redo procedures are not feasible because of the poor condition of the coronary arteries, age or major comorbidity; the number of these patients is gradually increasing. This observation initiates new experimental, non-invasive methods to improve coronary circulation and myocardial perfusion with the option of relief of untreatable angina. These attempts vary from nerve stimulation to gene therapy [2]. Acoustic pulse waves are used in an experimental attempt to eradicate drug-refractory angina because it initiates angiogenesis in experimental conditions [3]. With an amount of energy about 10% of that usually applied to crush kidney stones, several favourable bio-effects have been documented. An increase of vascular endothelial

Propagation and dispersion of acoustic waves is one of the important phenomena in physics. Acoustic-waves are nowadays widely used in a variety of applications ranging from underwater communications, identification and specification of the internal defects of materials to extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Apart from application and utilization of such phenomena, study on production and pro...
متن کاملEntropic-acoustic instability in shocked accretion flows
A new instability mechanism is described in accretion flows where the gas is accelerated from a stationary shock to a sonic surface. The instability is based on a cycle of acoustic and entropic waves in this subsonic region of the flow. When advected adiabatically inward, entropy perturbations trigger acoustic waves propagating outward. If a shock is present at the outer boundary, acoustic wave...
متن کاملNon-radial instabilities of isothermal Bondi accretion with a shock: vortical-acoustic cycle vs post-shock acceleration
The linear stability of isothermal Bondi accretion with a shock is studied analytically in the asymptotic limit of high incident Mach number M1. The flow is unstable with respect to radial perturbations as expected by Nakayama (1993), due to post-shock acceleration. Its growth time scales like the advection time from the shock rsh to the sonic point rson. The growth rate of non-radial perturbat...
متن کاملShock waves in dusty plasma with non-thermal ion distribution and charge fluctuating negative dust
A dusty plasma system containing Boltzmann-distributed electrons, non-thermal ions, and mobile charge fluctuating negative dust has been considered. The nonlinear propagation of the dust-acoustic (DA) waves in such a dusty plasma has been investigated by employing the reductive perturbation method. It has been found that the dust charge fluctuation is a source of dissipation, and is responsible...

Structure formation and wave phenomena in moderately coupled dusty plasmas." PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) thesis, ABSTRACT Dusty plasmas, defined as plasmas of ions, electrons, neutrals, and charged micron to sub-micron dust particles, support a rich diversity of physical states. These states (ranging from solids to liquids to gas) are determined by the ratio of the Coulomb potential energy betwe...
